Photomath

Is this the end of the Maths teacher??

I think not.

Photomath is a new app that claims:
"PhotoMath is the world's first camera calculator. Just point the camera towards the mathematical expression, and PhotoMath instantly displays a correct result."

Check out the below:

Dan Meyer weighs into this one here. I think any teacher who thinks this will replace them should not be teaching. If we believe (and we should) that coming up with good questions, being able to think logically and flexibly and solve non-routine problems is more important that the kinds of problems Photomath solves, then this is just another tool in the students toolbox. WolframAlpha does an amazing job at this (yes you have to actually type the question in!).

So what of the future? I can see one day the son and grandson of Photomath solving anything (right now it is pretty limited) which means a good teacher will be even more important in guiding and developing mathematical thinking in the students of tomorrow.
