Portfolios

Students have been doing assignments for decades, actually ever since school was invented! Typically the people that see these assessments are the teacher and the student and MAYBE Mum and Dad. What happens to them after they have been marked and handed back? We all know -probably gathering dust somewhere.

Technology allows us to dust off the idea of students keeping a record of their work. Using a digital portfolio students can showcase or collect their work and display it to as many people as they want, for peer review or for ongoing assessment and review by a teacher. No longer do we need to just see the end product but can see and help a student shape their work based on feedback during the learning process. That is powerful.

A digital portfolio can be used to showcase learning and reflections over a period of time, and may provide evidence towards assessment. Students' digital portfolios can include documents, pictures, reflections, video - anything really!

An ePortfolio is "a digitised collection of artefacts including demonstrations, resources, and accomplishments that represent an individual, group, or institution" (Lorenzo & Ittelson, 2005). It can be a digital repository for a range of learning materials, including those produced for course-based assessment. ePortfolios are planned and compiled by the owner (students) rather than by the teacher.

I am sure that students keeping a portfolio of work that

  • grows and develops over time
  • is always accessible
  • is safe and won't get lost/destroyed/eated by the dog
  • is able to contain digital objects - pictures/video/sound

would be an advantage in many subject areas.

For example:
A teacher may ask students to reflect weekly on their learning and keep these updated. What have you learned? What have you struggled with? What will you do next to improve? Looking at the answers to these questions over time would be instructive.
Students can upload pictures of their work in progress and get feedback from peers, teachers and parents.
A teacher may ask students to add a 30 second video entry in their folio explaining the idea they are working on.

There are a few options:

GoogleDrive - Here is a video that describes the process. Our students should have all the tools on their iPad to do this.

Google Sites - Students can create a site (like the one above) which they can customise to look how they want.

Seqta - check out the video below to see how easy it is for students to create a folio in Seqta and share that with other students and staff.
