Changing lanes

In 2016, I have taken on a new role as Head of Library, Information and Research services. Rather than being a whole new direction or thinking of this as a turn off the road to EdTech nirvana, I'd like to think of this metaphorically as a lane change - still heading in the same direction, but new perspective, new resources and hopefully a clearer path up ahead.

It is clear that the library in a school can play a vital role as the hub for digital resources and knowledge of how to access these resources. Getting to know the systems of the library gives rise to many questions and ideas for how we can do better. A few initial thoughts:
  • Do we need all those non-fiction books??
  • Why is the digital book app so poorly resourced? Why is there a disconnect with publishers? How is it that our students see that some books are already "out"? Huh??
  • How can we use the space in the library better? How can it be a space that inspires learning, innovation, reading, reflection. I have seen some great designs!
  • Where does the Makerspace go? How do we get started with that?
  • Clubs - bring on the chess club! Where is the Scrabble club??
  • Libguides - great opportunity to resource staff with research guides and differentiate by reading level.
  • Libanswers - we need a knowledgebase system for answering FAQs
  • Why are reference materials so expensive? How much are they used? Need the data!
  • It is great to work on integrating the disparate ICT help and librarian groups. Our work is under one banner LIBIT and we need to continue to forge that partnership.
  • How do we resource staff with professional learning books an promote these?
  • How do we promote and exemplify the Catholic ethos of the school?
  • What role do we play in supporting the College goals to improve student outcomes? Lots of answers above!

There are many more! The journey has begun... I still want to post ideas here for new and emerging tools and ideas for EdTech, there MAY also be stuff about libraries also!
