OneDrive

OneDrive is Microsoft's service for "cloud" storage. It is available for free for anyone, but as a teacher in a school with Office 365, it comes with additional benefits, including a whopping 1TB of storage space per user.

With OneDrive you can store, sync and share any type of file. The files can be accessed from a web browser or, if you're using Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, directly from the operating system. Other means of accessing your OneDrive files include apps for Windows, Windows Phone, Xbox, Mac OSX, iOS or Android. These apps can be downloaded from here. If you have Windows 10, the app is already installed.

Why use OneDrive?

Having your files online or in the Cloud is a major change in the way you work

  1. Accessibility - no need to email files home or use thumb drives to share work. Your files can be accessed from any device.
  2. Security - you never have to worry about losing a file again due to your hard drive failing. Just log in again on a new device and all your files are there
  3. Collaboration - unlike files that live on your computer, files in OneDrive can be shared easily (no more worries about emailing large files) and Word, Powerpoint and Excel documents can be accessed by several people at the same time enabling real-time collaboration
  4. Organisation - any file I add to a folder on my laptop is automatically uploaded to the Cloud and synced with all of my other devices (phone, tablet, desktop) so my folder structures remain consistent.

For those with Office365 it is a no-brainer to use OneDrive. The change in paradigm from keeping files on your own computer to files in the Cloud is a game changer!
